Monster Hunter Now: the new augmented reality mobile game from Niantic and CAPCOM

CAPCOM, the famous console game developer, and Niantic, the leader in the generation of augmented reality tools (the creator of Pokémon Go), have partnered to launch an AR game on mobile: Monster Hunter Now.

Monster Hunter is an existing game about hunting giant monsters. Players can work together to capture the monsters more easily. Monster Hunter has become CAPCOM's most popular game, with sales in the tens of billions worldwide.

In the upcoming AR game Monster Hunter Now, the story won't change: you'll still have to capture monsters, but this time in real life. Niantic has developed the game so that the monsters can be integrated into augmented reality using your mobile phone's camera. As in Pokémon Go, you'll be able to see the creature you're hunting appear in front of you, but you can also invite your friends to hunt the monster with you.

The game is not yet available, but Niantic has announced its official release in September 2023. For the impatient, a beta version will be released soon and those who want to have access to it can now register to be selected to access this version.

Augmented reality: a powerful tool for mobile games

After the huge success of Pokémon Go, Niantic released a number of mobile applications that let you play in augmented reality, including Pikmin Bloom. All these AR games only offered to project a few AR elements, and it's only with the release of Monster Hunter Now that we can see the real added value of augmented reality.

Monster Hunter is an existing game about hunting giant monsters. Players can work together to capture the monsters more easily. Monster Hunter has become CAPCOM's most popular game, with sales in the tens of billions worldwide.

The game offers total immersion and a highly interactive experience that plunges players into a world of their own. Thanks to augmented reality, Niantic is offering another form of gaming that is revolutionising the world of gaming.

Firstly, this game can be played anywhere, as all you need is a smartphone. So you can play anytime, because augmented reality will transform your environment in every case, without having to wear a helmet or switch on a console.

What's more, Monster Hunter Now has the ability to add other players to the game in augmented reality. Very few AR games can achieve this feat, as it requires a great deal of research and programming. So, as well as offering an immersive game, Niantic and CAPCOM have created a social game in which friends can help each other win while playing in an augmented reality world.

More and more games are being offered in AR, and with advances in technology (augmented reality glasses), the world of video games is set to change and take a more immersive turn. For the time being, augmented reality has yet to show all its facets, but it is already widely used on social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok filters.
